‘We call two colors complementary if their pigments, mixed together, yield a neutral gray-black. Physically, light of two complementary colors, mixed together, will yield white. Two such colors make a strange pair. They are opposite, they require each other. They incite each other to the maximum vividness when adjacent; and they annihilate each other, when mixed – like fire and water.’ Johannes Itten, The Art of Color
With regard to Spectrum, the main motif of Belgrade of Light 2016 programme, we announce this year’s Symposium ‘Complementary Contrasts’.
Inspired by multidisciplinary values, observed form the angle of three professions and three spheres of knowledge - light art, lighting design and science – we continue to explore the nature and phenomenology of the light. This year, we begin our journey with the lecture ‘Light – Interior – Exterior and Bob Dylan’ of our distinguished guest and lighting designer Gustavo Avilés from Mexico, known for his poetic speeches and narration plot-twists. Further, into the vast region of secrets of the universe and astronomy we will be guided by the prominent professor and lecturer, President of the Scientific Committee of the Astronomical Society of Novi Sad, the astrophysicist Tijana Prodanović.
Whilst the second part of the symposium we will continue to explore the contrasts among the brightest creative individuals and minds of the national sky. The ‘Brilliant Serbian Scene’ will take us through the sphere of socially responsible design in socially excluded environments; through the optical mechanisms that determine the colors in the world of insects Lepidopteria; towards the VJ-ing, the rhythmic light and electronic sound all the way up to the shadow theatre. We will have opportunity to hear how the light shapes the architecture; how certain materials, depends on their size, fluoresce with a different color; whether one day of a year will become the Internatinal Day of light and, the ideas by which the Belgrade light detectives tend to launch the Mobile Laboratory of Light.
Will the journey ultimately reveal the specific nodal points of the overall experience and knowledge?
Will the complementary pairs be confirmed or the entirely new relationship scale be titled?
